Let Love Continue

“Let love of the brethren continue.” Hebrews 13:1

We LOVE¬†to use the word love. We’ll use it to describe a craving for pizza, and then use it to describe our affection for our spouse. From hobbies to habits; from movies to moms…we’re in love with the word love.

In the Greek language, there were four words used to describe our one English word for love.

  • Eros – describes a sexual love.
  • Storage – describes a family love.
  • Agape – describes an unconditional love.
  • Philadelphia – describes a friendship love.

The word choice by the author in Hebrews 13:1 was philadelphia. In other words, let your love for your brothers and sisters in Christ continue to grow.

This specific instruction assumes there is a brotherly love to begin with. You can’t continue something that never started in the first place.

So let me ask you a question. Is your love for your church family growing?

Just like any close family, there are times when others will frustrate us, disappoint us, and encroach in our space.

Here are a few things we can all do to let our love grow towards our church family.

1. Forgive.

Easier said than done right? Forgiveness isn’t about letting the other person off the hook. Forgiveness is about you deciding not to hold the offense against a person. It’s letting go for your own sake, freeing you from a being chained to a grudge.

2. Encourage.

Life is tough. We all need encouragement to get us through the rough spots, but we also need to BE encouraging to others around us. Encouragement binds the hearts of the giver and receiver.

3. Bless.

There’s something unifying that takes place when you bless someone. If you have been on the receiving end of a blessing, your heart grows fonder of the one who blessed you. We must remind ourselves daily that we are blessed to be a blessing.

4. Pray.

When you intercede for others, your heart grows for them. Presenting other people’s needs to the Heavenly Father is biblical and keeps your life other’s focused. Who have your prayed for lately?
