Do You Know Your Church’s Business?

We don’t like to think of the church as a business because it’s not.  It’s a living organism.  A church is not the budget or the building.  It’s the people who make up the body of Christ.

The church is not a business, but the church has a business.

Do you know the business of your church?  I’m not asking if you attended the last business meeting.  I’m not asking if you know everyone’s personal business.  I’m not asking if you know the latest gossip or rumors floating around your church.  I’m asking if you know the business of your church?

Jesus told his earthly parents, “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business.”  Jesus knew His business, and Jesus took care of business.  Guess what?  The business of the church is no different from the business of Jesus Christ!

Our main business is to be about our Father’s business.

1. The business of the church is to exalt Jesus Christ.  Everything we do should be about lifting up the name of Jesus.  When a church fails to magnify Christ, she steps away from the Father’s business.

2. The business of the church is to make disciples.  The Great Commission calls us to “go and make disciples.”  That means people who are followers of Jesus Christ.  If your church doesn’t produce disciples, you may be in the wrong business.

3. The business of the church is to send.  When you read through Acts, you see a sending church.  They sent missionaries (Acts 13:2). They sent resources (Acts 11:29). They sent leaders (Acts 15:22).  The attitude was never, “Let’s see what we can hold onto.”  The early church was a sending church.

May the church today be about our Father’s business.
