Watching the Wind

“He who watches the wind will not sow and he who looks at the clouds will not reap.”  Ecclesiastes 11:4

I actually enjoy watching the wind.  Ok, so I guess we can’t really watch the wind, but we can most certainly see the effects of the wind.  It can be displayed as a large, powerful force or a small, gentle breeze.  A wind can mean a storm is brewing or a cold front is looming.

The wisest man who ever lived speaks of wind watching in a negative sense.  I have to wonder, what’s the big deal?  Why is Solomon such a downer on wind watchers?

What Solomon is pointing out is that watching the wind is pointless. It serves no purpose.  It accomplishes nothing.

We’ve all been there; staring off into the distance dreaming about what should be, could be or might be.  Our mind aimless wanders into the clouds to escape the reality of the work that is before us.

Are you watching the wind?  Do you ever get stuck in a glare scrolling through Facebook, scanning the TV channels, or surfing the internet?

I definitely don’t want to be a kill joy.  There is certainly a time and a place for Facebook, TV, and internet.  However, I would challenge you to begin asking yourself these 2 questions:

1. Is this the BEST use of my time?

Paul encourages us to “redeem the time.”  That means to cash it in, or exchange it for something better. If there is something better you could do with your time, DO IT!

2. Does this help or hinder the work God has called me to do?

God has a calling on your life to do a good work.  Don’t give up on that work.  Don’t get distracted from that work. No one else can accomplish the work God is calling YOU to do!

Some people watch the wind, and others seize it.  Which one will you be today?
