“But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5
Have you ever read a familiar passage of Scripture and all of a sudden it speaks to you in a new light? This past Sunday that happened to me. As I listened to Bobby Tucker preach about Jesus through the eyes of the prophet Isaiah, something struck me.
Isaiah 53:5 is a verse I’ve read countless times. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve preached on it! It speaks of the agony and suffering that Jesus willing paid for our sin…my sin. It tells of the amazing love our Savior has for us to endure the most grueling death so we can experience true healing.
What I found particularly interesting this time was the prophet’s use of past tense to describe a future event. Isaiah prophesied hundreds of years before Jesus Christ walked the earth. Yet when speaking of the cross he didn’t say, “is going to be pierced,” or “is going to be crushed.” He said, “was pierced,” and “was crushed.”
It’s as if from God’s perspective, the cross had already occurred. It’s a done deal! There is no changing the outcome.
Think about this: the death of Jesus Christ is not an uncertain possibility but a certain reality. Even for those who lived before His time on earth. Here’s a truth you can be assured of today. From the foundations of the earth, God has a plan.
Let that encourage you this week. God has a plan. Whatever challenge you face, God has a plan. Whatever happens in the news, God has a plan. Praise Him today, because He has a plan!
