How to Discover Your Spiritual Gift

Does it really matter if you know how to discover your spiritual gift? YES!

Here’s what Paul wrote to the church in Corinth. “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be unaware.” (1 Corinthians 12:1)

Paul’s intention was not for the church to simply understand the subject of spiritual gifts. He wants them to know the specifics of their own personal spiritual gifting.

Why does it matter if we know how God has gifted us?

  • It matters because you can’t use what you don’t know you have.
  • It matters because there’s a void in the local church when you aren’t using your gift.
  • It matters because serving God outside of our spiritual gift puts a reliance on our strength vs. depending on His strength.

As followers of Jesus, indwelled by the Holy Spirit, we need to understand what our spiritual gift is for the good of others (1 Cor. 12:7) and to the glory of Jesus (1 Cor. 12:11).

We want to share a free online resource to help you discover your spiritual gift. It doesn’t matter if you’re a new believer or mature follower, this resource can provide some valuable insights. Before you begin, here are a few thoughts we want you to remember.

1. Remember, it’s just a tool!

This tool is not a replacement for the Word of God. I would encourage you to spend some time reading what the Scripture says about spiritual gifts. (See 1 Corinthians 12; Romans 12:3-8; 1 Peter 4:11; 1 Timothy 4:14)

As you read these passages, ask God to reveal to you the gifting He has given you.

2. Remember, don’t neglect the others!

If you discover you’ve been given the gift of mercy or faith, it’s not a license to abandon the gift of evangelism or giving. Having one particular gift does not exclude the other gifts in your life.

Yes, you should use your primary gifting and focus on ways to serve there, but also remember that God works through our weaknesses as well. Surrender your weaknesses to Him just like you surrender your strengths to Him.

3. Remember, you grow and seasons change!

I don’t see a precedence in Scripture that once you’ve been given one gift you are set for life. Things change! As we grow and mature in our faith and walk with Jesus, I believe our spiritual gifts can grow and change as well.

During one season of life, God may grant you a special provision of faith and discernment, while in another season of life God may grant you gifts of shepherding and mercy. He equips you for the work of today for the good of others and the glory of Christ!

A few helpful tips when filling out the survey:

  • Expect the survey to take about 20-30 minutes.
  • Take the survey at a time when you’re relaxed, not rushed.
  • Don’t try to over-analyze each statement. There are no right or wrong answers, so select the option you think best applies.
